Alcohol Awareness: Education for Alcohol Abuse Awareness and Treatment

Alcohol abuse and addiction has become a major substance use problem in the United States. To help raise awareness of alcohol and the issues it can cause when it becomes an addiction for individuals, the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence has named April to be Alcohol Awareness month.

According to the NCADD website, since 1987, the NCADD has used the month of April to help increase public awareness and understanding and reduce the stigma associated with alcoholism that often prevents people from seeking help. Also, according to NCADD, April has been designated as Alcohol Awareness month to help focus on reaching teens and youth , since  this is the season for prom and graduation celebrations.

We’re thankful to NCADD for designating a month to help spread awareness of the issues many individuals and families face associated with alcohol abuse. This post contributes to this effort tohelp educate our audience on recognizing the symptoms of alcohol abuse. Whether you recognize these symptoms in yourself or in a loved one, knowing these signs and symptoms may help prevent a problem before it develops or before an existing problem worsens.

Signs and Symptoms of Alcohol Abuse

Many people enjoy the occasional drink after work. However, it’s vital to know when alcohol becomes a problem. According to NCADD, here are a few key signs of alcohol abuse:

  • A desire to stop or decrease drinking, but the inability to do so.
  • Unsuccessful attempts to set limits on drinking (such as when, how often or how much).
  • Increase in tolerance. As you begin to drink more, your tolerance increases. If you feel like you now need to drink more to feel the same effects, this may be a problem.
  • Neglecting activities or responsibilities in order to drink. Are you neglecting friends and family to drink? If so, you may be experiencing a problem with alcohol abuse.
  • Drinking to deal with stress or other emotions such as sadness or anger – as mentioned above, there are many who enjoy an occasional drink to unwind, however, if this becomes your primary way to manage stress or cope with life, it may be time to seek help.
