Price tag for new mental health center in Collier now at $50M

The price tag has gone up for Collier County’s long-planned mental health center to meet demand for treatment services.

Collier leaders are looking at $50 million to build an 87-bed center on five acres that the nonprofit David Lawrence Center owns adjacent to its mental health campus off Golden Gate Parkway near Interstate 75. An estimate last June was $44 million.

David Lawrence will be donating the land to the county and will have the contract to run the future county-owned mental health complex.

The new price tag came as no surprise to the board as construction costs for any type of project have steadily gone up tied to supply chain and labor issues following the COVID-19 pandemic.

But it was going to be $53 million and $3.2 million was shaved off due to “value engineering,” according to an update presented to the Collier County Commission on Tuesday.
