TYPES OF DEPRESSION | KNOWING THE SYMPTOMS OF DEPRESSION

What is Depression?

Depression is a condition that makes someone feel sad most of the time and makes it hard to manage daily life. It can be treated by taking medicine, by talking with a therapist, or by making changes to one’s lifestyle. However, there are many different types of depression. Whatever the cause may be, it is important to let someone know how you are feeling. Consulting with a mental health specialist is crucial to better understand what kind of depression you might have to better treat it.

What Are Some Examples of Depression?

Major Depression, also known as “Major Depressive Disorder,” individual feels depressed most, if not all of the time. Symptoms of major depression include:

  • Loss of interest or pleasure in daily activities
  • Weight loss or gain
  • Difficulty sleeping/ staying awake
  • Feelings being “sped up” or “slowed down”
  • Feeling worthless/ guilty
  • Trouble concentrating or making decisions
  • Thoughts of suicide
  • Severe episodes can include symptoms of psychosis

Persistent Depressive Disorder, previously known as “Dysthymia,” depression that lasts longer 2 years or longer.

  • Change in your appetite
  • Sleep too much or too little
  • Lack of energy or fatigue
  • Low self-esteem
  • Feeling hopeless
  • Difficulty making decisions/ concentrating

Disruptive Mood Dysregulation, individuals experience chronic, severe persistent irritability

  • Recurrent verbal or behavioral outbursts
  • Mood is persistently irritable or angry most of the day

Each type of depression is different and must also be treated differently. Depression can be managed if the correct measures are taken.
