Collins Family Carries on Norris Foundation’s Legacy of Giving

Joann Dellora Norris Collins, a daughter of the late famed philanthropists Dellora Angell and Lester J. Norris of St. Charles, Illinois, began supporting the David Lawrence Centers more than ten years ago when her son William (Will) suffered depression after the sudden death of his partner of more than 13 years. Since that time, both Will and Joann have been strong supporters of mental health services, having known many personal friends and families who have also been greatly affected by the disease. Will adds, “There is so much suffering out here and so many people that need help. I wholeheartedly believe in the work being done at the David Lawrence Centers and the good they do for children and adults. Everyone deserves a chance to get help.”

Joann’s parents’ legacy of public service traces beyond 1917 when Dellora inherited millions amassed through the manufacturing of barbed wire and the founding of the Texas Oil company (recognized now as Texaco). The family’s generosity has, through their family foundation, contributed greatly to the quality of life in both St. Charles and Naples. Through the Norris Foundation, Joann became heavily involved in healthcare related causes specifically Delnor Community Hospital which bares a portion of her mother’s name (Del for Dellora and Nor for Norris) where she was a lifetime member of their Women’s Auxiliary and a Foundation board member. She was also honored with a lifetime achievement award known as the Charlemagne Award.

Will describes Joann, who passed away last year, as a simple woman who cared more about helping others than acquiring material things. He adds, “Mom was full of love, joy and selflessness. She always believed it was better to give than to receive. My hope is to carry on what my grandparents started and to keep their spirit of giving alive.”
