What is Outpatient Addiction Treatment?

Long-term addiction recovery requires specialized care which can be found in two different types of treatment: outpatient addiction treatment and residential addiction treatment.

As a leading provider of addiction treatment in Southwest Florida, we often are asked: “which addiction treatment program is best for me or my loved one?” We’ve outlined here some of the key characteristics of outpatient addiction treatment and how to tell if it’s the right addiction treatment program for you or your loved one.

Outpatient Addiction Treatment

Outpatient treatment shares a lot of features with residential treatment including education about the disease of addiction and how to develop healthy coping skills for managing life in recovery. However, the outpatient treatment environment is different from that found in residential treatment. This can make a big difference in terms of how a client will respond.

Outpatient addiction treatment offers clients increased freedom of movement and the opportunity to maintain a daily lifestyle which may include the ability to continue with education, work, families, etc.

The Crossroads Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is designed for adults over the age of 18 who have substance use problems, but who may require a more flexible intensive addiction treatment program. With our intensive outpatient program, participants may maintain personal and professional schedules, while receiving the help they need to recover from addiction. The IOP program may last 6-8 weeks (24 sessions) consisting of group counseling three days per week. Participants are expected to attend 12-step meetings as well.

Partial Hospitalization Program

Some individuals may be recommended for treatment in a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP). In the Crossroads PHP, clients participate in daily programming at Crossroads for most of the day, five days per week, while leaving to sleep either at home or in a sober boarding location.

What’s the Difference between Outpatient & Residential Addiction Treatment?

The biggest difference between outpatient addiction treatment and residential addiction treatment is that during residential treatment, the individual remains at the rehab facility’s dedicated residential treatment facility under staff supervision 24 hours a day, 7 days per week. At Crossroads, we have 18 beds dedicated to residential treatment and the length of stay can range from 2-5 weeks.

In both the residential and outpatient treatment programs at Crossroads, there is one major factor in common: our dedication our clients’ success in addiction recovery.

Which Addiction Treatment Program is Right For Me?

Both treatment options have their benefits. Individual treatment recommendations should be determined by a qualified medical or behavioral health professional after an assessment of your unique drug or alcohol abuse symptoms.
