What is Partial Hospitalization? New Program Comes to Crossroads

Partial Hospitalization Programs generally refer to a comprehensive, short-term, intensive, clinical treatment program. Partial hospitalization is a step below inpatient hospitalization, but is more concentrated than traditional outpatient care. Clients are generally referred to partial programs when they are experiencing acute mental health or substance use symptoms that are difficult to manage but that do not require 24-hour care.

Crossroads, a program of the David Lawrence Center, specializes in a variety of substance use treatment, and has recently extended its outreach through the addition of the Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP). This type of care is designed for individuals who are in need of intensive structured programming, but who either are unable to or choose not to participate in our residential treatment program.

Traditional inpatient or residential treatment programs provide 24-hour support, while the patient resides within the facility itself. Inpatient or residential programs usually range from two to five weeks based on the specific needs of the individual, and provides education about the disease of addiction, coping skills for managing thoughts, feelings and behaviors, healthy relationships and more.

Crossroads PHP provides treatment, support, education, monitoring and accountability during the day, while allowing individuals the flexibility to reside at home or on-campus through the Center’s new self-pay boarding option in the evenings. Individuals in this participate in therapeutic groups and structured activities onsite in the Crossroads treatment program during the day for a minimum of 20 hours per week (Monday-Friday).

When to Consider Partial Hospitalization Programs

  • If you or a loved one is considering substance use treatment, this can be a great alternative to traditional inpatient substance use care.
  • If you or a loved one is looking to transition or step-down care following an inpatient stay in lieu of continued hospitalization.
  • When the severity of substance use symptoms is such that the level of treatment recommended is less acute than residential care, but an outpatient level of care does not provide enough support and structure.

There are also many other advantages to participating in a partial hospitalization program such as social interaction with people who have dealt with similar experiences. Participants also get the opportunity to interact with psychiatrists, social workers, nurses, and other mental health practitioners.

The goal of many partial hospitalization programs, including the Crossroads PHP, is the development of skills that help clients better manage their lives and their symptoms for long-term recovery. Many Partial Hospitalization Programs are covered through most insurance companies and some Medicaid plans.

After completing Crossroads PHP, individuals have the option to transition to or step down into Crossroads Intensive Outpatient Treatment, which meets less frequently and for fewer hours per week. Our outpatient therapy is also offered as part of an aftercare plan designed to help sustain the participant’s recovery.
