DLC to Honor Five at Annual Recovery Month Awards Ceremony

Naples, FL – David Lawrence Centers, Collier County’s only comprehensive, not-for-profit mental health and substance use treatment facility serving children, adults and families, is pleased to announce the Annual Recovery Month Awards Dinner will be held September 20th at 5:00 p.m. at the New Hope Community Center located at 7676 Davis Boulevard in Naples.

Every year, David Lawrence Centers joins the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and other voices of recovery from across the nation to observe National Recovery Month. This observance, now in its 29th year, promotes the message that behavioral health is essential to health, prevention works, treatment is effective, and people recover.

The 2018 Recovery Month theme is “Join the Voices for Recovery: Invest in Health, Home, Purpose, and Community.” It explores how integrated care, a strong community, sense of purpose, and leadership contribute to effective treatments that sustain the recovery of individuals with mental health and substance use disorders.

At the awards ceremony, David Lawrence Centers will honor the following outstanding individuals for sharing their voices to advocate, educate, mentor and help others in need of mental health and addiction recovery services:

Robert Crowe is being honored as a Recovery Community Volunteer. Crowe is an active leader in the recovery community of Collier County and proudly shares his 26-year sobriety journey with others. He regularly coordinates groups of volunteers who visit local treatment centers, detox units and jails spreading hope and encouragement by showing that recovery works. Crowe also sponsors and mentors individuals through their recovery process —including many who have completed DLC’s Crossroads addiction recovery program.

Allen Weiss, MD is being honored as a Prevention and Treatment Partner. Dr. Weiss is the President and CEO of the NCH Healthcare System and has practiced medicine in Rheumatology, Internal Medicine, and Geriatrics. Dr. Allen has led the Blue Zones initiative helping to make Collier County the healthiest and happiest region with the longest life expectancy in America. In addition to advocating for how to prevent illness, Dr. Allen has been a dedicated treatment partner, working closely with DLC to save the lives of those in crisis in Collier County.

Captain Beth Jones is being honored as a Prevention and Intervention Partner. Jones is the Captain of the Collier County Sheriff’s Office Youth Prevention and Delinquency Services Division. Throughout her 28-year law enforcement career, Jones has shown a dedication for helping troubled kids and teens. She has worked alongside DLC on a variety of youth-oriented programs and trainings and is a strong advocate for mental health interventions in the schools.

Laurie Lyons is being honored as a Holistic Treatment Volunteer. Lyons is a yoga and meditation instructor and the Co-founder of Open Mind Zen Naples, a space dedicated to offering donation-based meditation and yoga. For several years, Lyons has provided meditation services for individuals in the DLC Crossroads residential treatment program and has donated in-kind services as prizes to many DLC events.

Nancy Scheffer is receiving a special Lifetime Recognition Award. Scheffer retired in 2018 as a DLC Crossroads Behavioral Health Technician. During her 28-year career in behavioral health, she has touched thousands of individuals and families battling addiction. In addition to her professional work, she selflessly volunteers her time to support people in recovery and children affected by addiction in their families.

The event will be emceed by WINK news anchor Therese O’Shea. The evening includes education and awareness community partner tables during the reception, dinner, a raffle and the awards ceremony. HelloSWFL is the media sponsor.

Sponsorships and donations help to ensure the event will remain free to attend. Donations are appreciated and will be accepted at the event or in advance online. For donation information and event registration, visit DavidLawrenceCenter.org or call 239-354-1445.
